The motto of father’s day is to strengthen the relationship with father. This day also increase the solidarity of paternal bonds.
History of Father’s day:
Historically, two stories are pretty much popular about Father’s day. The first historical fact happened on 5th July, 1908. On that day, about 362 men were died by a mining accident at the Fairmont Coal Company in West Virginia.
To honor all the men who were died by the accident, Grace Golden Clayton, the daughter of a dedicated reverend, proposed to observe that day as Father’s day. It is also considered by many people that Grace Golden Clayton put that proposal inspiring by Anna Jarvis who succeeded to establish Mother’s Day only two months prior. However, Grace Golden Clayton succeeded in her attempt and Father’s day was observed for the first time on 5th July, 1908. But that observation was a one time commemoration and not an annual holiday.
The other phase of the history of Father’s day inaugurated from the celebration of Father’s day by Sonora Smart Dodd on 19th June, 1910 in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA. Sonora Smart Dodd was one of the 6 daughters of a widower named William Jackson Smart who was a civil war veteran. Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to give his father special honor and so she proposed to announce her father’s birthday as Father’s day. In order to do so, Sonora Smart petitioned to the local administration and to the church. After a year of petitioning, Father’s day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington on 19th June, 1910.
Although the celebration of Father’s day inaugurated from 1910, it took 62 years to be a federal holiday. In 1913, for the first time, a president, Woodrow Wilson encouraged the celebration of Father’s day and introduced a bill regarding Father’s day in Congress. Unfortunately, it wasn’t passed. But Wilson and his family personally celebrated Father’s day in 1916.
In 1924, American president Calvin Coolidge showed his positive opinion towards celebrating Father’s day. His opinion was that Father’s day should be observed in order to make the relationship between fathers and their children stronger. Indeed, Calvin Coolidge was the first president who insisted the state government to celebrate Father’s day.
In 1966, American president Lyndon B. Johnson ordered an execution to celebrate Father’s day on the 3rd Sunday of June. 6 years later, in 1972, the first act of celebrating Father’s day was passed under the president Richard Nixon and thus Father’s day became a national holiday permanently.
There were many facts which were against the official announcement of Father’s day. Many persons disdained the observation of Father’s day. The celebration of Father’s day was also called a commercial gimmick because many companies tried to gain commercial benefits using the day. Sometimes, it was also happened that the price of the gift purchased by the children had to be paid by the father himself.
In accordance with the history, during the 1920s and 1930s, an agitation was arisen to combine Mother’s day and Father’s day in a view to make a single holiday, Parents’ day. However, the movement of combining Mother’s day and Father’s day was hostile to the retailers, advertisers as well as manufacturers. So, the retailers and advertisers doubled their attempts to keep Mother’s day and Father’s day separate. When the 2nd world war began, advertisers started to argue that observing Father’s day was a great way to honor the American troops and encourage them.
However, the history of Father’s day proves that the process of making Father’s day a national holiday wasn’t too simple. Father’s day took nearly 60 years to take a place in the national holidays by an act. At present, almost 87 countries in the world celebrate Father’s day.
